In the last home game in the Central League for 2009, Wellington Olympic kept their title hopes alive by beating Wests 3-1 in what shaped up to be a great day at Newtown Park.
Mikey Halikias opened the scoring for Olympic with a wonder strike about 30 yards out beating the Western Suburbs goalkeeper in the top right corner.
Mickey Malivuk added to the scoreline after connecting on to Anthony Neonakis' driven cross and heading Olympic ahead 2-0.
Chaz Lawrence put the icing on the cake after finishing nicely inside the box with a well timed volley putting Olympic 3-0 ahead and securing the 3 points for the home side.
Western Suburbs managed to claw one back making the scoreline more respectable and capping the game off at 3-1.
In all a great day for Olympic and the supporters who were there in numbers to support their beloved squad!
With 3 games left in the Central League, against Petone, Wairarapa, and Western Suburbs all away, Olympic need to convert all three into the full 9 points to finally add the Central League trophy to their cabinet. With Western suburbs having to play Miramar in their last fixture, a result for Miramar there will see the title go down to the wire and most probably decided in the last game.
For now lets get behind the boys and take each game as it comes and give the club our full support as we drive towards our Central League aspirations.
Thank you all for your support and dont forget the Chatham Cup Semi-Final against Manurewa @ Newtown park, August 30th.
