Blackburn has become a familiar face to Wellington and New Zealand Football after signing for Mick Waitt’s Exodus Team Wellington as a youngster back in 2006. At club level he has previously played for Upper Hutt City, Stopout Sports Club and Lower Hutt City. Sam is a former New Zealand representative at youth level, as he was selected in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Squad in 2006, and was also selected in the New Zealand National U20s team in 2007.
During his national league career, Blackburn featured heavily for Exodus Team Wellington for many seasons before departing shores to fulfil his scholarship in Alabama, America.
Born and raised in Upper Hutt, Sam accepted a full Scholarship in 2009 to the University of Mobile. During his time in America, Sam was named in the Southern States Athletic Conference All-Academic Team of the Year in 2010, 2011 and 2012. He was also named Southern States Athletic Conference Honor Student Athlete of the Year in 2011.
After returning to New Zealand, Sam joined Wellington Olympic AFC at the start of 2014 campaign. Since his arrival, Sam has become a key attacking threat to the side and was very influential throughout his debut season at the club. He went on to make 18 appearances across all competitions for the first team; having played in sixteen Lotto Men’s Central League games, and also two ASB Chatham Cup ties.
The club are very pleased to have Sam re-sign for season 2015. He had a tremendous 2014 season at the club; was named Player of the Year, top goalscorer and was also selected in the 2014 Central League Team of the Year. We look forward to another successful season from Sam.
