Barcia is a hard working commanding midfielder who stokes the fire in the engine room and gives that extra toughness in the middle of the park.
Mario is used to training every day in Argentina where he started as a junior at Newells Old Boys (2003-2008), the club where Lionel Messi began his career.
Barcia’s career to date has taken some path; in 2009 Mario signed for Independiente De Avellaneda (the club which Manchester City’s Kun Aguero started his career), where he played for the club’s reserve team and took part in a preseason campaign for the club’s first team. In 2010, Mario took the opportunity to move back to his home town of Santiago Del Estero, where he played for Central Cordoba, a third division side in Argentina.
That move was short lived, as in 2011 Mario experienced his first season away from his home country, as he signed for Bolivia’s first division side, Club Aurora. He spent just a single season in Bolivia before moving back to Argentina in 2012, where he signed for third division side Club Sportivo Fernandez.
In 2014 he had the chance to come to New Zealand and experience something different. He continued to ply his footballing trade as he signed for Island Bay United in Wellington’s Capital Premier. After a successful winter campaign Mario signed for Hawkes Bay United in the ASB Premiership, and has spent the summer playing in the sunny Hawkes Bay.
At the weekend, Mario confirmed his next destination, as he committed his future to Wellington Olympic AFC for season 2015.
The Argentine had the following to say after speaking to Wellington Olympic AFC Capital Premier Coach Martin Pereyra Garcia. “I’m very pleased to have committed my future to Olympic, and I’m really excited for the season ahead. I look forward to start training with my new team mates and of course playing at my new winter club. I am really happy with this opportunity and pleased to play for one of the best clubs in New Zealand. Olympic feel football, they play like we do in Argentina and that is quite hard to find in any club here in New Zealand.”
Everyone at Wellington Olympic AFC is excited to have Mario on board for the season ahead, and we wish he all the best for the 2015 season at Wellington Olympic AFC.
