Upper Hutt U19s Tournament Day One Wrap

Upper Hutt U19s Tournament Day One Wrap

A good start for our U19s in the Upper Hutt Tournament today at Harcourt Park, as they took on Levin, Miramar and Island Bay in their Group Pool.

Olympic looked the better team against Levin in the first half, with good team work and fast pace. Shot after shot just seemed to go a bit wide, leaving our sideline frustrated and Levin relieved. Captain Dimitri Apostolakis took the lead and drove home the winning goal in the 8th minute of play. Levin changed tactics in the second half, coming out more determined. On the other hand, our lads came out a bit too relaxed and was soon feeling the pressure. Olympic stepped up the pace in the last 10 minutes of play to deny Levin any comeback. Olympic win 1-nil.

Having lost their first game, Miramar took control of the second game very early on with no less than 5 of their shots on target (compared to our 2). Keeper Chris Kotrotsos was in his element and kept them frustrated. Our defence worked overtime and there was plenty of pushing and shoving in the midfield. With no score in the first half, Olympic came out in the second to play a more determined game. Some excellent play from both teams kept the supporters on their toes as the ball yo-yoed from one end to the other. A great challenge by James Ignatidis (guest player) saw the Miramar Goalkeeper out of goals and misjudge the bounce of the ball. A simple tap was all that was required, but James was a bit too enthusiastic and the ball sailed over the crossbar....

Winger Robbie Bradley put Olympic on the scoreboard when he placed the ball at the back of the net in the 34th minute. Olympic win 1-nil.

The third pool game against Island Bay saw us coming down hard on their goals, keeping both their Goalkeeper and defence working hard. The frustration was really showing on Island Bay as they tried to work the ball through the midfield. A nil-all halftime score gave Island Bay some hope but did nothing to dampen our own determination. Island Bay came out firing in the second half but found Olympic's defence solid. Anthony Androutsos managed an easy goal from a cross to put the team ahead 1-nil. Minutes later, Anthony was taken down in the penalty area and Captain Dimitri stepped up. Olympic win 2-nil.

Olympic continue their quest to bring home the silverware tomorrow as they meet the runner up of the Group 4 Pool (10am kickoff) in their Quarterfinal round. Semifinals will be played at 1.30pm / 1.45pm with the Final set down for kickoff at 4.45pm on the Maidstone Park Turf.

Thanks to the many spectators that came out to cheer our lads on today!!!
