2016 Central League | R2 Weekly Wrap

Former Central League champions Napier City Rovers had to fight hard to take home three points against Wellington Olympic at Wakefield Park on Saturday.

They didn’t have it all their own way however after giving away a penalty early on.  But their experienced showed and they took the chances offered scoring twice before half time with goals to Tom Biss and Stephen Hoyle.

Western Suburbs played host to Miramar Rangers at Endeavour Park.  The game started at a hectic pace with Miramar taking the lead early on following an error by the Wests’ defence.  Miramar’s Finn Moore took the opportunity, went round goalkeeper James McPeake to score the opener.

The pace eased in the second half and Wests slowly started to dominate possession. They were rewarded with an equaliser to Elijah Just in the 60’, but were denied the victory with a superb save from Dan Clarke, leaving both teams to take home a point. Final score 1-1.

There were goals a plenty at Memorial Park in Palmerston North as Wellington United travelled away to face Palmerston North Marist.  Marist struck early with a goal to Rhys Gayler in the 8th minute.  Following a second goal by Jerram Tuck, Wellington United fought back and scored three before the half time break.

A further two goals in second half sealed the impressive win for Wellington United, although Marist managed to grab a third leaving the final score 5-3 to Wellington United.

Memorial Park in Petone was the venue for the local derby between Stop Out and Petone.  Goals from Stop Out’s Micky Malivuk and Andrew Abba saw Stop Out quickly take control of the game.  Petone had few chances on goal, but a strike from Ben Feld was pushed wide by Stop Out’s keeper.

A second to Abba, and a well-timed chip over the head of the Petone keeper had Stop Out heading to the break 4-0 up.

Petone showed a stronger defensive effort in the second half, which was marred by yellow cards to both teams and the sending off of Jordan Pickering.  A goal a-piece in the second half had the game finish up 5-1 to Stop Out, who now top the table with maximum points from the first two rounds.Hard fougth v

A 2-1 win for Wairarapa United against Lower Hutt City sees them grab their first points of the season, with Sam Mason-Smith scoring both goals for United.  Lower Hutt’s goal came from a penalty in the second half.
